ECCLESIAM tuam, Domini, sancti Caroli Confessoris tui atque Pontificis continua protectione custodi; ut sicut illum pastoralis solicitude gloriosum reddidit: ita nose jus intercessio in tuo semper faciat amore ferventes. Per Dominum Jesum Christum… (Collect for the Feast of Charles Borromeo)
Today the Church Universal celebrates the feast of the celebrated Archbishop of Milan, St. Charles Borromeo. Renowned as one of the leading saintly Bishops in the Council of Trent. He helped the papacy, especially the papacy under Pope St. Pius V to reform the Church. Despite of his upbringing as one of the aristocratic families of Milan, he chose to be charitable, donating his fortunes and serving the poor. He fought for the truth, helped authored the Catechism of the Council of Trent. He reformed his diocese which has been long neglected by the long absences of its former archbishops. He recognized that many of the ills and abuses in the Church of his time arose from the ignorance and lack of education of its clergy. Hence, advocated and established seminaries for the training of the clergy. His reforms were without opposition. But his faith in God and love for the Church helped him persists. His austerities and sufferings characterized his form of spirituality. He was canonized on November 1, 1610 and his name was added to the calendar of Saints three years later. His feast day fall on November 4.
