Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr. St. Lucy belongs to the roster of Roman Martyrs who died in the fierce persecution under the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Her promised of virginity for the sake of Christ and her charity towards the poor stood as light and witness in this dark world. True enough to her name Lucy which means "light". In Scandinavia and in many parts of Italy St. Lucia is celebrated. Myths and tradition surrounds her story. But one thing that could be learned from her life story is that she is a person who courageously stood for Christ even at the cost of her life. Christ said, "if you confess me before men, I will also confess your name before God and the angels. But if you deny me, I will also deny you before God and His angels." Indeed St. Lucy confess Christ in the face of her enemies and through the grace of the Holy Spirit stood with strength for her Lord. May we also received this grace from God.
I took this snap video from a presentation by the Undergraduate Students of DPCR, Uppsala University, Sweden. The DPCR tendered a dinner for us at the Uppsala Castle and made this surpised presentation of St. Lucia's Day. The dark and gloomy skies of Sweden had made lights and candles a popular thing. The feast of St. Lucia is celebrated in many parts of the Scandinavia and in some parts of Italy. This song-dance presentation is an example.
