October 26, 2008 is the 24th Sunday after Pentecost. This Sunday is also the solemnity of Christ the King. The Kingship of Christ the Lord reminds us that Jesus is the anointed one of God and that "his kingdom will have no end...." Some people throughout the history of Christendom were falsely led to believe that Christians must hold on to political power in order to implement the Kingship of Christ. But the Gospel teaches us that Christ is not a temporal ruler of this world. On one occasion when interrogated by the High Priest’s court, Christ said that if He were a temporal King then His disciples would take the sword in order to fight. These people never realized that the Kingdom of Christ is at present a pledge in the heart of each and every Christian and will have its fulfillment in the day when Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. Should we not rather anticipate the second coming of Christ by living holy lives? Our Lord admonished us to store riches in heaven and not on earth. In this world our riches shall be moth-eaten while in heaven no one can take our riches away from us. This our Lord said if only to give us a glimpse of the eternity of heaven and the temporality of earthly life. Those who think that by taking political power in the name of the Church or of Christ they are building the Kingdom of God, are in error. For Christ is indeed King, Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And we are reminded daily by the sacraments, doctrines and liturgy of the Church that Christ will come again in Glory!
